The ‘First Time’ in El Chopo Hash
Did you know that the largest Church in Derbyshire is St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield? It’s
very, very old, and otherwise known as the ‘Crooked Spire’. The spire of the Church is both twisted and leaning, twisting 45 degrees and leaning 9 feet 6 inches (2.90 m) from its true centre. It does look as if it will fall down one of these days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesterfield_Parish_Church The reason that the spire is crooked is because, the ‘Spire’ was so shocked to learn of the marriage of a virgin in the church, that it bent down to get a closer look.
Should this happen again, it is said that the ‘Spire’ will straighten and return to its true position.
Anyway, last Sunday, Indalo Hash found four, yes four, virgins in Arboleas, when they visited El Chopo; so if there is anyone from Chesterfield, who wants to ‘sort out’ their church, give me a call, and I’ll let you know who, these hashing ‘first timers’ are!
And we had virgin hares too. ‘SoftWhere’ and ‘BumBag’ set an excellent first hash around the foothills of Arboleas. After fine vistas and tranquil trails, 8 walkers, 8 runners, 5 mutts and the 4 intact virgins, arrived back, ‘virtually together’ for the circle.
Miscreants identified and punishments issued, the On-After was held at the Trinidad Bar.
Taberno – “the ‘On Back’ Hash”
Have you noticed that there aren’t many cuckoos about this year? Normally, their familiar call echoes around, to such an extent, that if I wasn’t such a mild mannered person, I for one, would scream, “shut the chuff up”!
Anyway, 16 Hashers and 4 mutts, eventually met up at the pretty village of Taberno on a fine spring morning. Some even had time to enjoy a ‘pre hash’ coffee, though there were other hashers who had followed Big Nut’s directions from Los Cerricos, who didn’t have time for one, because they arrived there via Murcia!
Off the walkers and runners went: a little around the village, and then down the rambla into the campo. Ox eyed daisies and poppies framed the route, very nice, but nettles lay underfoot. Eco and Ma Bates were the “such girly’s”, who complained, “oh I’ve been stung”, the most!
The hash eventually made it back to the circle via an obliging ‘camponista’s back garden! That wasn’t where the trail went, but she seemed quite happy to show us around her vegetable plot and display of irises.
And then ‘down downs’ were proclaimed and punishments issued. Most notably to Norman Bates for completing the hash in his car; Flower Power for being a running walker; NonCents for overtaking runners while walking, and SoftWhere for being the most unlucky ‘front running Bar Steward’. Don’t follow this man in the casino. If there was a false trail on the hash, and there were at least a dozen, this hasher could find them… and find them he did, so that he must have gone at least twice the distance of everyone else. And every time he discovered the false trail, all we could hear echoing around the valley was “on back, on back, on back”!

The Hash, which was the way to Amarillo
There are two truths about this Hash. Los Cerricos is no where near Amarillo and no one in Los Cerricos has ever heard of Tony Christie!
However, on a very pleasant morning, that belied the forecast of damp and showers, 20 odd hashers Brits and Spanish (there were too many virgins to count) eventually assembled outside the Polling Station at Los Cerricos. After making sure the ‘Hasher Party’ wasn’t up for election, they decided to go on a Hash instead – which was just as well because the Hares, ‘Norman Bates’ and (for the benefit of the Spanish Hashers) ‘Big Nuts’ got his Spanish name – ‘Los Frutos Secos Grandes’ – had put a lot of effort into creating a superb route, of almond groves, Arab Fort, aldea and mountains, and best of all a Beer Stop at Casa, ‘Richard and Celly’!
Now ‘Norman Bates’ and ‘Big Nuts’ are busy men. Laying the trail on the preceding Saturday was out of the question so the trail was laid on Thursday not with flour, but with dabs of paint – you guessed it – yellow paint ….. and early on Sunday morning the route through the village (aldea) was completed with colour co-ordinated yellow gram flour. It was an amarillo trail and not to be confused with the ‘Paint markings - possibly by thieves’ Hash!
At the circle the usual down downs were issued – most predictably for campo watering, to Puff and Ma Bates.
Then we had a really interesting naming, involving a ‘Mercadona’ bag and a constipated dog. Our new Harriet is called ‘Bum Bag’ – I’ll let you imagine why!
The Portalooa Hash
Amazingly this was a hash with no ‘campo waterers’. This was because it was the “Portalooa Hash” which coincidently was a along a trail laid by Puff and Click It, around Partaloa!
On a fine sunny day – 14 Hashers and 4 mutts met under the eucalyptus trees near Retamar.
The trail route took us into the campo, around a new estate and into the old village. A new destination for Indalo Hash and a pretty and interesting one too
All the locals were flooding their olive groves – it must be because the moon was full and the acequias running strongly. The walkers saw a small adder – a cocky little serpent with attitude as they returned along the rambla to the circle.
For misdemeanours we had runners impersonating walkers; walkers impersonating runners; loads of ‘real names’ and getting real names wrong. Ma got one for being too keen and limbering up! Click It and Flower Power got theirs for not paying enough attention. There were short cutters but no campo waterers – not even Puff.
On the hottest day of the year, 16 Hashers descended on La Cinta to be greeted by a lack of parking spaces. What is normally a quiet area on a Sunday morning was very busy, maybe the locals had heard about the impending Hash, even the horse tied up outside Bar Los Aguila was showing some interest as it stood there bathed in sunshine. As 11am approached everyone began gathering for the circle, ‘Nonsense’ clutching a coffee cup and ‘Rarebit’ chanting Wales Wales, this of course was ignored by the majority and then finally ‘Puff’ having to give chase after hash cash which had blown from his tight grasp, loosing a €5 note would definitely have been a down down.
The 2 hares ‘Petal’ and ‘Dyspraxia’ were invited into the circle to explain the runners and walkers routes for the day’s Hash, they pointed both groups in the right general direction and off they started, rather slowly at first towards the church in La Cinta the runners unable to escape the walkers, maybe the uphill start or possibly the false trails could take some of the blame, eventually after a few more false trails the runners hit the dirt with the walkers in close pursuit, this would not last long as the runners sped off into the distance leaving the walkers to at last find their own way.
The rougher terrain proved no obstacle for the athletic runners, ‘Two Hats’ leading the way closely followed by ‘Puff’ until his unscheduled stop to water the campo for which he would later suffer a down down, onwards they went towards the rambla and a right turn quickly followed by a step climb and rougher ground, this was short lived as an even steeper decent followed back onto the rambla.
By contrast the walkers would follow the same trail until reaching the first steep climb ignoring this and continuing along the rambla past the goats eating oranges from their dining table, sorry big skip, eventually they would have a few uppies and downies but nothing too challenging, after some 50 minutes they reached the tarmac road and turned right towards La Cinta arriving there some 10 minutes later.
By this time the runners had encountered yet another steep climb and yet more false trails, but relentlessly they kept moving, despite a few walks probably to take in the views from on high they reach the road, a few minutes later they were heading down again towards the rambla running between Almanzora and La Cinta fortunately it was not long before they climbed upwards again onto the tarmac and back towards La Cinta which would shortly be in sight, just when they thought the end was near there was one last diversion back onto rough ground towards the goats the walkers had passed in the other direction, as they began their last climb 3 motorbike scramblers sped by and some probably wished they could have hitched a ride, no such luck as they only had only a few more minutes running left, eventually arriving some 30 minutes after the walkers who probably didn't appreciate how much effort the runners had made that morning.
Everyone was happy to see ‘Puff’ unloading the refreshments from his van, some Hashers certainly needed re-hydrating (beer) and also appreciated the crisps, it was now time for the closing circle and as usual the 2 hares stood in the centre and the Hashers responded when asked what the thought of the Hash with RUBBISH, but it's doubtful if they had not enjoyed it, now for the “Down Downs” and as usual it was monopolised by ‘Nonsense’, who had numerous misdemeanour’s, before, during and after the Hash, but most Hashers had some indiscretion or other. We welcomed our virgin Hasher Stewart and finally 2 Hashers received their Hash names, Tina will now be known as ‘Paramedic’ for her sterling efforts rescuing ‘Nonsense’s’ vital life saving equipment from his pocket and Denise will be now be known as ‘Veggie’ for obvious reasons.
Now for the On-After and drinks and tapas in Bar Los Aguila until just after 2pm, hopefully everyone enjoyed the Hash and the efforts of the 2 virgin hares ‘Petal’ and ‘Dyspraxia.
The ‘Mind Your Head’ hash.
This had to be the coldest day of the year so far, but never-the-less Indalo Hash House Harriers gathered at the home of, Ageing Happy & Flower Power, near Los Cabreras, which is somewhere between the middle of nowhere and the back of beyond, but where, surprisingly, the sea could be seen between the mountains.
After the usual pre hash formalities, the chalk talk and the introduction of two virgins, the hash got under way, with the walkers going one way, and the runners going in the opposite direction (sneaky).
The trail was well marked and easy to follow, even the false trails, through the stunning scenery of this area, and after about 1½ hours the start/end was in sight.
Refreshments and nibbles were available for everyone when they returned, and then the ‘circle’ was formed, all the usual down-downs were awarded, including, short cutting, the FRB, use of real names, watering the campo and pocket billiards.
We also had two ‘naming ceremonies’, Cosmo, for offering centimos for his subs will, from now on be called ‘No Cents’, and Don, for just being a computer geek (sorry, expert), will now be known as ‘Soft-Wear’.
At the ‘on-after’, Flower Power offered the group four different soups and a mountain of bread, in their old restored cortijo, which had some low doorways, and on numerous occasions the call, “mind your head” was heard, only to be followed by some naughty expletives, as the call was too late.
A damn good hash, in a beautiful area and a nourishing on-after, so hopefully we’ll be invited back there soon……Hint hint
Today we started our hash from Iceland, not the Republic of Iceland in the North Atlantic, but in the car park of the Iceland store in Vera. For January the weather was perfect for hashing - clear sky, warm sun and a slight breeze.
20 of us, including two visitors from TruroH3, met just before 11:00 to hear the trail instructions from the Hare, “Economical”.
This hash was supposed to have a ‘Scottish’ theme, and there was a spattering of tartan here and there, but not much more, may be they were just expecting some whiskey to drink? No way, whiskey is far too expensive, it was Scottish theme after all!!!
The running pack departed the car park and quickly lost the trail! (The trail we did find turned out to be the homeward journey “scent”). Eventually with a little prompting from the hare, we were on track again, and after about 15 minutes we caught up with the walkers who had found the correct trail. The scent led us through the campo along tracks and tarmac without any real difficult terrain to negotiate.
The highlight of the trail turned out to be some scarecrows tied to poles, giving rise to some smart comments for which “down downs” were issued later in the hash circle. Other down downs were given, for watering the trail (or was it the car park) to two hash virgins and other misdemeanours.
The ‘Red Dress’ Hash 2012
Well, where to start?
Perhaps with an apology to the residents of El Rincon and La Cinta near Arboleus, who had their Sunday morning tranquillity disturbed by the raucous visit of 18 Hashers and Harriett’s, all suitably decked out in their stunning red dresses. The ‘Red Dress’ Hash – where everyone wears – guess what? – a red dress, is a long standing tradition of international hashing. In the red dress ‘fashionista’ stakes, a special mention should be made to Norman Bates for his Eddy Izzard impression; Puff for just being so gorgeous and blonde (and more about him later): Harvey the Old English Sheepdog for really entering into the spirit of the event as well, and Key Fob for doing the whole hash with his ‘cock’ sticking out!
An excellent hash often starts with excellent coffee, this time at the El Castillo Bar. Then off we went across the campo; two equal group of walkers and runners, plus assorted mutts. The trails meandered very enjoyably on a sunny morning, through the rambla and the orange groves. January 8th and we all had our ‘strappy tops’ on. We also made an occasional foray into residential roads, where the Hash was greeted from garden gates with puzzlement (what are these mad people about?) and also much mirth, before returning to the vicinity of the bar for ‘the circle’.
Numerous ‘down downs’ were issued. Most notably to Tonto and Petal for scrumping oranges: Ma Bates and Flowery Knickers for watering the campo and (the tartan tighted) Tenna Lady for thinking this hash was for Burn’s Night. We also had a naming – from now on, Stuart will be known as ‘Tacky’!
Then we went for the On After (lunch and drinks at the Bar). As promised a special mention of Puff’s antics. Not only did he scare all the young Spanish children back into their mother’s arms, by thrusting condom shaped coloured balloons, twisted into animal shapes into their arms: he upset the waiter’s girlfriend by sitting on the waiter’s knee; and then he completely ruined the reputation of the said waiter and the bar, by coaxing him into a red skirt! For what end – who knows?
“The Hash that was a ‘chuffin’ long way” – Hash
18 of us, and 5 mutts assembled in Lubrin. Returners, Tonto, Prof and Denise were especially welcomed.
If you haven’t been, Lubrin is a pretty and notably friendly town, in the Sierra de los Filabres, and well worth a visit.
The walkers set of for a very pleasant and scenic stroll led by DQ, into the campo around the periphery of the town.
The runners set off in the other direction, along ramblas, through small villages and up mountains; as well as a guided tour of the olive oil factory. Key Fob said they had even got to the outskirts of Mojacar!
Just before dusk the walkers and the runners were reunited.
The hare, Two Hats, reckoned he had learned the tactic of deliberately ‘getting things wrong’, as a bairn, (he’s Scottish). “If you break enough pots while washing them, they don’t make you do it again!” Unfortunately for Two Hats, the Hash verdict is that, he just needs more practice on laying
trails!
At the circle, many ‘down down’s’ were issued. Key Fob in his Santa suit got one for coming too soon! Bog Trotter said ‘he normally does’, and then she got hers for incitement to break hash custom and practice. Click It and Denise didn’t walk; they ambled and chatted, and just had too much of an enjoyable and relaxing time! This isn’t how ‘Hashing’ is meant to be.T
Then we went for an enjoyable ‘On After’ at the bar in Aljibe, where Puff chatted up the barmaid!
